Dr.
Marty Dunsky (D.O.) is a licensed teacher (Shidoshi) of Budo
Taijutsu under Hatsumi Soke of the Bujinkan Honbu in Noda-shi,
Japan. As a husband, father, and an emergency room physician,
Dr. Dunsky has pursued martial arts training in Bujinkan Budo
Taijutsu since 1995.
As a student of Kurt Rittenhouse Martial Arts and then the Dayton
Bujinkan Dojo, Dr. Dunsky dedicated much of his free time towards
training, eventually earning his Shodan (1st Degree blackbelt)
in 1998. Continuing his path towards internalizing the kihon
happo and san shin no kata of the Bujinkan, Dr. Dunsky earned
his Nidan (2nd Degree Blackbelt) in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, and
visited Japan for a second time to train with Soke and the Bujinkan
Shihan during the late summer months of 2001.
In 2002, Dr. Dunsky chose the goal of nin (perseverance) as
a yearly focus in his training. It soon enveloped his life and
career, as work changed his path and focus. At some points during
the year, Dr. Dunsky was forced to work 28-35 days in a row,
and yet was still able to maintain training, teaching, and family
obligations. His understanding of Taijutsu and methods of perseverance
in life were enhanced and strengthened by year’s end. Because
of his new level of skill and endurance in Budo Taijutsu, Dr.
Dunsky was awarded his Sandan (3rd Degree Blackbelt).
By 2003, Dr. Dunsky had earned an OPOTA (Ohio Peace Officer’s
Training Academy) Instructor’s Certification for in-service
police personnel. He continued to train diligently, sharing his
knowledge when instructing, and focusing with deliberation on
the intricacies of Budo Taijutsu. The art was becoming his own.
Earning his Yondan (4th Degree Blackbelt) early in the year,
Dr. Dunsky’s methods of training and teaching began wearing
off on other students. Soon, those who trained with him began
finding new levels of confidence and understanding in their own
movement.
On September 21, 2003, while in Japan for training at the Bujinkan
Honbu, Dr. Dunsky was given the opportunity to take the Godan
test (5th Degree Blackbelt). In a beautiful fashion, and with
a confidence that brought him to this level, Dr. Dunsky became
the first student of the Dayton Bujinkan Dojo to pass the Godan
test, given by Nagato Shihan, and administrated by Hatsumi Soke. Dr. Dunsky's most recent Japan trip was in August of 2007, in which Soke awarded him his Judan.
Dr. Dunsky continues to train diligently in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu,
focusing on improving his physical movement, refining his understanding
of the kihon happo, and studying the historical aspects of the
Bujinkan. His caring attitude and unquestionable generosity toward
the dojo and its students are examples for all Bujinkan deshi
to learn from. He is a superb example of someone who holds a
strong “warrior spirit” and “good heart”,
as Hatsumi Soke feels is ever so important. We thank Dr. Dunsky
for continuing on his path and sharing his knowledge with those
around him.
