SHIDOSHI
TONY MADDIN
Mr. Tony Maddin is a licensed teacher (Shidoshi) of Budo Taijutsu
under Masaaki Hatsumi, Soke of the Bujinkan Honbu in Noda-shi,
Japan. Shidoshi Maddin first learned of Budo Taijutsu while serving
his country as a US Army Ranger in the early 1990’s.
At the end of 1993, upon completing his military duties, Shidoshi
Maddin joined Kurt Rittenhouse Martial Arts School (KRMA) and
became a fulltime student. Studying Budo Taijutsu at KRMA under
Shidoshi Rittenhouse, Shidoshi Klug, and Mike Latch, Shidoshi
Maddin quickly advanced in ability and rank. He was seen as one
of the senior students of the school, and many junior students
began training with him.
By 1995, Shidoshi Maddin had earned his Shodan (1st Degree Blackbelt)
and was teaching fulltime at KRMA. He was instrumental in helping
grow the school to more than 200 students. With his continued
training and advancement, Shidoshi Maddin earned his nidan (2nd
Degree Blackbelt) during the 1996 holiday season.
In 1997, Shidoshi Maddin helped renovate and open the Dayton
Bujinkan Dojo with Shidoshi Ochester and Gregory Sherwood after
KRMA closed. In addition, he started his own training group while
attending college at the University of Dayton. Shidoshi Maddin
continued to rise through the ranks as his skills increased.
By 2002, he had earned the rank of Sandan (3rd Degree Blackbelt).
In 2003, Shidoshi Maddin went to Japan for the first time, where
he trained for 26 hours over an eight-day period with Hatsumi
Soke and the Bujinkan Shihan. In this same year he was promoted
to Yondan (4th Degree Blackbelt), along with graduating from
the University of Dayton with a major in MIS.
In 2004, during his second trip to Japan, Shidoshi Maddin passed
the Godan test (5th Degree Blackbelt) under Hatsumi Soke. He
was honored as the 1,992nd person to pass the Godan test, and
earned the title “Shidoshi” (teacher of the warrior
way).
Shidoshi Maddin continues to train and teach Budo Taijutsu throughout
the Dayton, Ohio area, and is best known for his “aliveness” and
exceptional timing when performing techniques. We thank Shidoshi
Maddin for sharing his Budo at the Dayton Bujinkan Dojo, and
look forward to being part of his future training and instruction.
